If you like a little sweet with your heat, then try this amazing sauce recipe created by the city of Saint Louis. Honey Hot is a very popular sauce in the Midwest and the city of Saint Louis has definitely embraced this sauce. Honey Hot is known to be added to wings but also goes well with fried chicken breast, catfish and even fried salmon bites. Although there’s not many items in the recipe for the sauce, it makes all the ingredients a key importance.
-1/2 cup of honey (any honey of your liking will do)
-1/4 melted butter (or ghee/vegan alternative)
-1/4 of franks hot sauce (or any your favorite hot sauce)
Also, for my fans of the Honey Hot Wings here is my preparation/ingredients for the chicken.
-2lbs chicken wings split into flats and drums
-olive oil or avocado oil
-garlic powder
-paprika
-cayenne pepper
-salt and black pepper
Instructions: Melt the butter in a saucepan, add hot sauce and honey and whisk to combine. Simmer for 2-3 minutes to thicken.
Instructions for the wings:
1-Prepare and season: preheat oven to 400 degrees. Pat wings dry and toss with olive oil and seasoning.
2-Bake: position wings in a single layer on a baking sheet. Roast for 45 minutes then flip and cook for another 30-45 minutes.
3- Make the sauce as explained in the instructions above for sauce only.
4-Coat and serve: Drain excess fat from the wings. Toss with the Hot Honey sauce and serve.
A helpful hint, when I toss any item in the sauce, I put a tablespoon of cold butter in the bowl while the wings are piping hot and then toss them in the sauce. This process helps the sauce stick to the wings not making them super soggy.
This sauce is very delicious, and it complements more than wings. Try it with catfish nugget bites, fried salmon bites, fried chicken breast and even pizza.
I hope this recipe finds its way into your kitchen and into your hearts. I will be bringing more St, Louis cultural foods to you guys soon.
